Puppies and Booze

I was pretty stoked when I saw Mayor Greg Fischer post a pic visiting new small business Vines & Canines on Frankfort Avenue.  The idea of bringing two great things together, wine and animals, just seemed too good to be true. Was I going to get Rick Rolled when I clicked on their website? Look what I discovered:

Freaking adorable.

The idea behind the shop from owner Marc DeMichele (pictured above with his mama):

Vine & Canines (was) developed from my personal love for my dog, and for fine wine, as well as my desire to unite everyone who shares these passions. This idea grew out of an evening of pulling corks with a dear friend along with our dogs and the realization that our experience was enriched by our four-legged pals. I not only want to provide a unique line of products for lovers of dogs and wine, but also create events where people with similar interests could meet and celebrate this affinity we all share.

What a unique concept! Shake your tail on over to Vines & Canines and support local business owners. Need some more feel-goodiness? A portion of all of their proceeds go to the Kentucky Humane Society to benefit animals in need. Giddeyup!

1760 Frankfort Avenue .  Open Tuesday–Thursday from 12n to 9p.   Friday & Saturday: 12n to 10 p.

Calling All Restaurants!

Easter Seals is a group many people have heard of, but do you know exactly what they do? Locally the Easter Seals have been supporting Louisville kids since the 50’s, helping special needs children with speech, hearing, and developmental therapy.   They protect our kids’ senses! That makes sense!

The only thing closer to Louisville than our families is our passion for great food, which is why the May 3rd Taste of Oaks at the Galt House is such a worthy event.  I’m excited to join an event that last year had 800+ fine folks sampling from 17 restaurants, all for a great cause.  Has your family benefited from the Easter Seals?

Supporting the Easter Seals of Louisville

While May is still far away the Easter Seals are in full planning mode signing up restaurants to feature their food.  If you know a restaurant that is a perfect fit for this community event, pass along the reservation (PDF) and get signed up!

Hate the Sarah McLaughlin PSA? Something you can stomach.

Oh my goodness if I see another sad Sarah McLaughlin animal PSA I’m going to cry. But what’s a food and animal lover to do to help those cute critters? Luckily two of my favorite spots are teaming up for what should prove to be a great night.

Join the Animal Care Society February 20th at The Village Anchor, 11507 Park Road, Anchorage, KY 40223.  Our gracious hosts at the Village Anchor will donate 10% (including alcohol) of your check to our shelter when you mention The Animal Care Society!

I’m going to be there because I know how fulfilling it is to adopt rescues.  And I finally have an excuse to post a picture of my cats on my food blog.

Mush is my girlcat (left). Prince is my boycat. Aren't rescues the cutest?

Cupcakes for Kids

A MegaBitesLouisville reader passes along this fantastic information about a way you can both eat cupcakes and donate to charity:

Louisville bakery Cake Flour creates two confections in honor of the Breeders’ Cup with a portion of the proceeds benefiting The Kids Center. This year’s cupcakes, created exclusively by Cake Flour, a Louisville-based natural and organic bakery, features two varieties- a chocolate cupcake with strawberry cranberry vodka buttercream and a chocolate cupcake with orange zest vodka buttercream. The recipe for the Breeders’ Cupcakes can be found at www.breederscupcake.com. Cupcakes can be purchased individually for $4 or by the dozen for $44. One dollar from each cupcake sold will be donated to The Kids Center, a Louisville based organization that helps children with special needs.

You had me at vodka buttercream.

So basically you hop downtown to East Market Street, buy a couple cupcakes and provide therapy for children with special needs who would otherwise be turned away. The Breeders’ Cupcakes will be on sale today through Nov. 5 at Cake Flour at 909 E. Market St., Suite 100, Louisville, Ky.
