Eat like a King

Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s day and eat like a king.  What is MLK’s favorite food? Soul food! Fried Pork Chops, mac and cheese, sweet potatoes, green beans, and homemade sweet tea.

If you’ve read my post about chicken and waffles, you know I’m a big fan of soul food. In Louisville I’ve only been to one true soul food establishment, Soul Unique on 25th and Broadway, which has a regular dining room and smaller dining areas set up like tiny living rooms.  I had the Kool-Aid of the month (fruit punch), fried chicken, mac and cheese, collard greens and a sweet potato pie.  Another place I’m dying to try is Queenies on 2956 Richland Ave (though closed on Mondays) and Franco’s on Dixie Highway, which is set up like a school cafeteria but boasts some amazing fried catfish and smothered pork chops.  If you know of other must try soul food restaurants in Louisville please leave a comment!

The Village Anchor is celebrating as well with their specialty MLK menu:

To celebrate MLK’s ideals and vision, Chef and his team have specially prepared for Monday an offering of his favorites:  Sweet golden cornbread topped with butter, drizzled with honey and sorgham ($7); Soft Bibb lettuce salad with bacon, house-made pickled eggs and stoneground mustard and sherry vinaigrette dressing ($7 side/$14
entrée); Tender 8-oz. breaded, fried and smothered boneless pork chop served with sweet potato pone and Southern-braised greens ($18). Top all of this off with MLK’s favorite dessert: Southern deep dish pecan pie topped with a scoop of Comfy Cow vanilla ice cream ($8).

Yum! MLK knew how to eat! Happy Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. day folks.
