Against the Grain

It may not be summer anymore but that’s no reason not to head to Slugger Field to check out the new restaurant Against the Grain Brewery.

Against the Grain has an edgy feel to the decor.  The entrance greets you with a sign that reads “Happy hour from 4p-7p. It’s cheaper than therapy”.  The walls are decorated with modern art of women with tattoos, spray painted murals and a beer wall featuring a variety of ales and lagers with names like “who shvarted”.  But don’t let the names fool you, their beers are delicious.  If you’re feeling adventurous try the “Brutal Experience”, which for ten bucks get you 32 ounces of various beers, bitters, and liquor chosen by the bartenders and kept secret from you.  Each one could be different.

The Brutal Experience was big, cheap and delicious.

Their menu features a variety of foods satisfying both the vegan or carnivorous appetite.   Apps included smoked beer cheese with bbq kettle chips, hickory smoked fried hominy (vegan), pulled pork nachos, bbq vegan wings, smoked beer battered onions rings, and smoked red pepper hummus (vegan).  Against the Grain also serves up a variety of salads, (the most unique being the fried chicken liver salad), sandwiches, burgers, and entrees that were unexpectedly inexpensive! The duck dish I had was only $17:

Duck breast served up with diced root vegetables and sauteed spinach. Extra awesome because the duck was pink & perfect.

That is a truly beautiful and tasty dish I would expect to pay $25 for in any other restaurant. My companion chomped down a $10 griddled black angus burger served on a challah roll with white cheddar, shredded lettuce, sliced vine ripe tomato and shaved spanish onion with a side of kettle chips. You can’t be a proper brewery without an amazing burger!

Going Against the Grain is a good thing.  Check em out yourself at 401 East Main Street, open Monday through Friday 11a-12a and Sundays 12p-9p.
